Kentucky is used to being an underdog.
In fact, it’s been the storyline of the season: as Kentucky continued to upset opponents and win big games, expert analysts continued to pick against the Cats. Vegas continued to set the line against UK. Opposing players continued to talk smack and try to downplay Kentucky’s talent.
But, according to the SEC Network’s Marcus Spears, that could be what gives Kentucky the edge over Georgia this afternoon.
“I think Kentucky is in that vein where you say in your mind, ‘It’s Kentucky.’ And then, it’s late in the fourth quarter, you’re either only up by three or you’re down by three and you’re still like, ‘But it’s Kentucky – we’re supposed to make a play and beat Kentucky,’ Spears told KSR yesterday. “But this team this year is like, alright, you all keep believing that.”
We’ve all heard (and probably even said) “that’s so Kentucky football.” And sure, we could debate until the end of time whether or not this season finally retired that painful phrase. But regardless, it will always be part of UK football’s history, and at least for now, it’s still stuck in the minds of opposing teams and even the professionals. But this season is different. And this season, Kentucky isn’t taking it. They’re going to fight back.
“‘We’re just going to be No. 1 in scoring defense; we’re going to show you all of these draft picks we have on this football team,’ Spears said of how this special group of UK players respond to critics. “And by the fourth quarter and the end of the game when it hits zero, [the opponent] leaves the field saying, ‘damn, they were a lot better than we thought they were.’ Hopefully you can keep sneaking up on folks.”
Today, only one College GameDay analyst picked the Cats to win out over Georgia. But time and time again, Kentucky has shown what the “experts” think does not matter to this team. And hopefully, by the time the game is over, Georgia will be leaving the field thinking Kentucky is a lot better than they thought.
Let’s do this thing.
