2018 Melbourne Cup favourite Yucatan has been dealt a blow ahead of the big race on Tuesday, ending up in barrier number 23 following the barrier draw event at Flemington Racecourse.
The most coveted barrier of all – number five – was actually the first to be picked after Red Cardinal (horse no. 14, Darren Weir) scored the opening draw.
It was the first of a few good barriers to go early, with Ventura Storm picking up number seven with the second pick, and Chestnut Coat scoring Rekindling’s victorious gate four with the third selection.
Venger Masque continued the lucky start with barrier no. 2, before Yucatan snapped the hot streak in half after being dealt barrier no. 23.
Rostroprovich was the next to end up on the outside after drawing barrier 21, Runaway (12), Nakeeta (3) and Sound Check (16) came back in towards the middle.
Zacada had the unlucky ‘honour’ of selecting barrier 24, and it was Who Shot Thebarman who continued the misfortune by picking the cursed number 18 immediately afterward.
More outside barriers were drawn, with Magic Circle (17), Finche (15), Ace High (22) and Cross Counter (19) all winding out on the outer side of the barrier.
The other notable draws included Avilius picking up barrier 11 and Best Solution picking up six.
